  Mike King In Avoriaz

FISE Expérience 2010 Avoriaz from olivier Batailler on Vimeo.

So last weekend I was lucky enough to be invited to another FISE stop, this time in Avoriaz, in the French alps.

Mankind's Isaac Lesser and myself arrived on the friday night to torrential rain, and doubts that the conteset was even going to go ahead the next day.

the next morning the rain had stopped, it was damp, and freezing cold, (not to self: check weather before going abroad), Isaac, equipped with mainly shorts and t-shirts, and myself, with only one hoody, rolled down to the course and rode practice before it was interrupted by rain half way through amateur.

The rain eventually stopped and the course dried, however, this is actually the least of your worries when you're trying to ride a comp in the alps. Due to the altitude, it is near enough impossible to breath.. Ok so i might be exaggerating a little, but after only a couple of minutes of riding, we found ourselves completely out of breath and violently coughing.

Georgy Domerus qualified 1st, dropping more hammers than a clumsy builder, Isaac qualified 3rd and myself, 7th.

That night was best trick, Daniel Wedemeijer laid down a perfect 360 whip to footjam, and georgy pulled a 540 barspin to barspin, earning them a joint 1st place.

French Amity rider via Mystic distro Mathias Augris was also in attendance and laid down a 3 whip fakie and 720 to fakie. Good stuff.

The next day we were all feeling a little worse for wear for finals, the party had sure been a good one.

The weather had turned the other way and was absolutley boiling hot and blazing sunshine.

My qualifying run went far from well, but somehow still landed me in 7th, Isaac however continued to kill it, perfect bars to hang 5 and 270 double whip over the hip gave him a well deserved 1st place!

The comp had now wrapped up and it was again, time to get on the drinking, the resort emptied out but there was still a few of us to make for a decent night, befor ebeing up at the crack of dawn to go mountain biking... Which was fucking awesome.

I still strongly believe that mountain bikes in no way are acceptable in a skatepark unless being used as a camp fire, and especially after experiencing how fun it is up in the mountains, i can't for the life of me see why you would want to ride that hunk of junk in a skatepark? Hmmm.

Anyway, rant over, it was truly an awesome experience getting to try that out, especially in the Alps, despite Isaac nearly dying by flying over a berm and falling 30 ft, it was so much fun.

With Isaac a little concussed and sore, we headed back to the apartment to pack up, before being taken to the train station at 5pm, which certainly gave us enough time to make our flight... as it was at 7pm... The next day.

An epic train/ bus/ tram journey followed by a 20 hour chill and we were eventually on the flight home.

It's definitely odd returning to England and it being warmer here...

  Luke Brocklebank Amity Edit

Untitled from Mike King on Vimeo.

Pretty much until the Amity In France video dropped, Luke Brocklebank was one of the best kept secrets of the south of England. A permanent ear to ear smile, and a huge bag of tricks he is able to do either way, makes him one hell of a treat to watch, and to be around.

Check this out, Luke's first edit for Amity, which we shot in two days in and around Bournemouth.

Ryan Taylor And Mike King In Anglet, France

So last Tuesday, myself and RT left for Anglet, France, where FISE were holding a spine mini contest.

I drove up to Birmingham to pick up Ryan at 10pm then we headed straight to the airport for our flight.

On arriving in Anglet at 9am, where the sun was absolutely blazing, we were told we could not check in to our hotel untill 6pm, completely sleepless, we stumbled to the beach and after a few minutes passed out in the sun with little/no sun cream on... Never a good idea.

We woke up 2 hours later as the most sunburnt humans since records began, (I'm sure you've seen the picture... Not sure I want to repost it...)

We met up with Olivier, the contest organiser, who had arranged for us to be interviewed by a local newspaper the next day, for a beer before heading back to the hotel for an early night.

The next day we met up with the journalist and answered some generic questions about riding, before shooting a few clips at the local park, which was tiny, slippery and full of oblivious skateboarders... But somehow fun as hell.

Friday, Olivier arranged with a local surf instructor/pro for us to have a surf lesson! What a treat, Mankind's Martyn Cooper turned up and showed us how it was done too, Ryan got the hang of it pretty quickly, whereas I spent my time almost drowning and being swept out to sea... Each to their own I guess...

The next day the comp kicked off with qualifying, Barry Kohne came super close to a flip to fufanu, a trick that has hauted him since he last pulled it 5 years ago... Ryan qualified in 3rd and I somehow footjammed my way into qualifying 9th.

Despite how exhausted we all were we did a small demo for the guys that evening, which was fair enough considering we were treated like kings while we were there...

Finals was pretty bananas, everyone killed it. There's something about a slightly smaller contest that makes for a big difference, everyone was just having fun, shredding and riding together, the finals themselves just felt like a big session with a group of friends.

Ryan bagged himself a second palce finish to JB, with Isaac Lesser hitting third, whilst I got 7th.

Good times.

We spent the next day just chilling and a few hours surfing once again, we were both feeling pretty rough after a rather messy night, we squeezed in a few more crepes and headed home the next morning.

Keep your eyes peeled for a wee edit of Ryan's trip in a few days time. RIDAZ!

  Brockles...

...Is the man.
If I were you, I'd be excited about seeing stuff like this in Luke's upcoming web video in a few weeks time...
