So last Tuesday, myself and RT left for Anglet, France, where FISE were holding a spine mini contest.
I drove up to Birmingham to pick up Ryan at 10pm then we headed straight to the airport for our flight.
On arriving in Anglet at 9am, where the sun was absolutely blazing, we were told we could not check in to our hotel untill 6pm, completely sleepless, we stumbled to the beach and after a few minutes passed out in the sun with little/no sun cream on... Never a good idea.
We woke up 2 hours later as the most sunburnt humans since records began, (I'm sure you've seen the picture... Not sure I want to repost it...)
We met up with Olivier, the contest organiser, who had arranged for us to be interviewed by a local newspaper the next day, for a beer before heading back to the hotel for an early night.
The next day we met up with the journalist and answered some generic questions about riding, before shooting a few clips at the local park, which was tiny, slippery and full of oblivious skateboarders... But somehow fun as hell.
Friday, Olivier arranged with a local surf instructor/pro for us to have a surf lesson! What a treat, Mankind's Martyn Cooper turned up and showed us how it was done too, Ryan got the hang of it pretty quickly, whereas I spent my time almost drowning and being swept out to sea... Each to their own I guess...
The next day the comp kicked off with qualifying, Barry Kohne came super close to a flip to fufanu, a trick that has hauted him since he last pulled it 5 years ago... Ryan qualified in 3rd and I somehow footjammed my way into qualifying 9th.
Despite how exhausted we all were we did a small demo for the guys that evening, which was fair enough considering we were treated like kings while we were there...
Finals was pretty bananas, everyone killed it. There's something about a slightly smaller contest that makes for a big difference, everyone was just having fun, shredding and riding together, the finals themselves just felt like a big session with a group of friends.
Ryan bagged himself a second palce finish to JB, with Isaac Lesser hitting third, whilst I got 7th.
Good times.
We spent the next day just chilling and a few hours surfing once again, we were both feeling pretty rough after a rather messy night, we squeezed in a few more crepes and headed home the next morning.
Keep your eyes peeled for a wee edit of Ryan's trip in a few days time. RIDAZ!
